Across California, a complete 40 hour renewal package generally runs from about $299 to $450. What you get for that price varies more than the number itself.
Why the range is so wide
Some providers split the package into 20 live Zoom hours plus 20 self-paced online hours. Others run all 40 hours live across four 10 hour days. A few sell the required dementia hours as a separate bundle on top.
Buying your hours piecemeal usually costs more, not less, because individual courses are priced per subject and it is easy to end up paying twice for a topic you already covered. It is also the easiest way to arrive at your expiration date short of a required subject.
What the state charges on top
Your course is not the whole cost. CDSS currently lists the administrator renewal application fee at $140, submitted with your LIC 9214 and proof of your hours. If your certificate has already expired, add the $300 delinquency fee under Title 22 section 87407(e), plus every continuing education hour you missed while you were lapsed.
So an on-time renewal is your course plus $140. A late one is your course plus $440 and extra hours. The gap between those two numbers is the best argument for starting early that we know of.
