Do My RCFE Caregivers Need CPR Training?
Many administrators ask: “Do my RCFE caregivers need to be CPR certified?” The answer is yes, at least one staff member on duty at all times must have current CPR and First Aid training. According to Health and Safety Code, “at least one staff member who has cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and first aid training is on duty and on the premises at all times.” This means your facility must always have a trained staff member available, including during overnight and weekend shifts.
The law doesn’t require every employee to have CPR certification, but it’s highly recommended that most caregivers receive it. Doing so ensures full coverage in case of emergencies and reduces risk for residents and staff. Title 22 also states that all staff assisting with residents’ daily activities must receive initial and annual training, including First Aid training from qualified providers such as the American Red Cross.
